This January, a new series begins of the popular art appreciation classes run by Chepstow Museum. Exploring the beautiful paintings and buildings of the 18th century, this ten-week series of art appreciation classes moves from the light-hearted and risqué Rococo to the formality of the neo-classical, covering on one hand the growth of satire and on the other, the birth of the Romantic period. This is the century when landscape painting came into its own, and the golden age of British watercolours began.

2020 is also the 250th anniversary of the Reverend Gilpin’s tour down the River Wye, which resulted in a book that set out the rules for a new way of looking at landscape as well as a guide to the sites of the Wye valley and inspired the pursuit of the Picturesque which so influenced the birth of tourism in Britain. Our art history course sets Gilpin’s tour in the context of the developing landscape art of Britain, which was in turn accelerated by the burgeoning interest in our own country’s scenery.

Come and learn about artists’ work from the frivolous Fragonard to the heroic David, the satirical eye of Hogarth to the glorious countryside of Gainsborough. No prior knowledge of art history is needed and there is no homework. This is learning for enjoyment and pleasure. The course is led by well-known and popular local lecturer Eleanor Bird. If you like looking at art and what to know more about understanding it, learning how to look deeper and appreciate the ideas and culture of the time, or if you just want to spend Monday afternoons looking at wonderful images of art in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, then give this course a try.

If you’ve not been before there is the opportunity to have the first lecture on Monday 20th January as a taster session. Lectures take place in the Drill Hall, Lower Church Street, Chepstow. Prior booking is essential though – so please visit or contact Chepstow Museum to book the course or taster session, telephone 01291 625981 (open every day except Wednesdays, from 11-4pm)
