ALFRED RUSSEL WALLACE DAY
Saturday 5th July 2025 11am to 5pm

To celebrate the achievements of one of Usk's most famous sons, Usk Civic Society will be hosting an Alfred Russel Wallace Day to mark the day, on the 1 July 1858, that Wallace and Darwin presented their theory entitled 'On the Tendency of Species to form Varieties'; and on the 'Perpetuation of Varieties and Species by Natural Means of Selection' was read out at the Linnean Society.

Alfred Russel Wallace was born in Kensington Cottage, Llanbadoc (next to Usk RFC) and spent the first five years of his life playing with his brothers and sisters on the banks of the River Usk and the ruins of Usk Castle.
