Gwent Levels

Visit the scenic Gwent Levels on the banks of the Severn Estuary in Southern Monmouthshire. It's an area shaped by history, made up of land reclaimed from the sea in Roman times, with evidence of this continuing to the present day. This lowland area with big skies contains 8 ecologically important Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs). With one of the highest tidal ranges in the world and ideal over-wintering conditions, up to 90,000 wading birds and wildfowl visit the Severn Estuary every year. Get up close to the area’s bird and other wildlife at Gwent Wildlife Trust's Magor Marsh wetland reserve and at nearby RSPB Newport Wetlands.

Or explore the history & heritage of the area through the ages, from the impressive Roman walls at Caerwent, to the Norman built Caldicot Castle and the living heritage of the Black Rock Lave Net Fishermen.

The Wales Coast Path winds its way along the coast of the Gwent Levels from Chepstow to Cardiff, before continuing along Wales’ entire coastline to Queensferry. For those looking for a shorter walk the Levels are covered in flat circular walks, making them well suited for walkers of all abilities.

Walk the Gwent Levels along the Wales Coast Path
Caldicot Castle and Country Park

Visit Caldicot Castle in its beautiful setting of tranquil gardens and a wooded country park. Founded by the Normans, developed in royal hands as a stronghold in the Middle Ages and restored as a Victorian family home. Entry is free.

Magor Marsh

Black Rock Lave Net Heritage Fishery

The lave net fishermen of Black Rock promote the fishery as a heritage site and invite all to enjoy this last remaining welsh severn estuary salmon fishery which can be watched quite safely from the picnic site.
