Wye Valley National Landscape

The river Wye flows through the Wye Valley National Landscape (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) on the border between Wales and England, with the serene Tintern Abbey at its centre. Birthplace of British tourism in the 18th century, even Wordsworth waxed lyrical about it. This border has shaped the land, and the way people experience it, with castles, towers, abbeys, market towns and industrial heritage dotting the landscape. Although the stunning landscape of the lower Wye Valley, with its unique blend of Welsh and English cultures, may feel a million miles away, it's only twenty minutes from nearby towns in Monmouth and Chepstow and offers a wide range of activities, including sightseeing, canoeing, walking, cycling and wild swimming.

Tintern Abbey (Cadw)

Cistercian abbey, founded in 1131 in the beautiful Wye valley village of Tintern. Remarkably complete abbey church rebuilt in the later thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries, with extensive remains of cloister and associated monastic buildings.

Shire Hall Museum, Monmouth

The Shire Hall Museum in Monmouth will close to the public on 20 December 2025 and will be closed throughout 2026 to reopen early in 2027 as it undergoes an exciting refurbishment. Shire Hall is a former Court of Assizes and Quarter Sessions in the centre of Monmouth, South Wales. It is a Grade I listed, classically designed building in Agincourt Square at the top of Monnow Street.
Chepstow Castle (Cadw)

Chepstow Castle is a must-visit as the oldest post-Roman stone castle in the UK (with the oldest castle doors in Europe!). It is a beautifully preserved masterpiece of medieval engineering, perched high above the Wye Valley like a history lesson in stone.
