Castles & historic sites

If it's castles you're after, you're in luck. We have nine dotted across our rolling countryside at Abergavenny, Caldicot, Chepstow, Grosmont, Monmouth, Raglan, Skenfrith, Usk and White Castle. (Reminders of the area's past turmoil and fiercely contested border location).

There are plenty of other historic buildings and sites. Not least the romantic ruins of Tintern Abbey or Llanthony Priory or the restored Shire Hall in Monmouth, scene of the infamous Chartist trial of 1839. Or Monnow Gate & Bridge in Monmouth, the only remaining medieval fortified river bridge in Great Britain with its gate tower still standing. Or Caerwent Roman Town, which was founded in 75AD and later became the largest centre of civilian population in Roman Wales.

Look out for hidden gems like Llanvihangel Court, which Charles 1 reputedly used as a hideaway during the Civil War.

Raglan Castle (Cadw)

Raglan Castle is an impressive fifteenth-century castle built by Sir William ap Thomas and his son William Herbert, remodelled by William Somerset, third earl of Worcester, 1549-89. Finest late Medieval fortress in Britain. On-site exhibitions.

Chepstow Castle (Cadw)

Chepstow Castle is a must-visit as the oldest post-Roman stone castle in the UK (with the oldest castle doors in Europe!). It is a beautifully preserved masterpiece of medieval engineering, perched high above the Wye Valley like a history lesson in stone.

Abergavenny Museum and Castle

Abergavenny Museum is open every day 11 - 4 except Mondays and Wednesdays. The grounds of Abergavenny Castle are open every day 11am - 4pm except for a two week period over Christmas and New Year. We look forward to welcoming you!

Caldicot Castle and Country Park

Visit Caldicot Castle in its beautiful setting of tranquil gardens and a wooded country park. Founded by the Normans, developed in royal hands as a stronghold in the Middle Ages and restored as a Victorian family home. Entry is free.

Usk Castle

Usk Castle nestles on a promontory overlooking the lovely town of Usk, hidden from sight most of the time, but just waiting for you to explore the ruins.

Monmouth Castle (Cadw)

Castle established by William Fitz Osbern in the late 11th century. The remains of the great hall date to the first half of the 12th century. Later remodelled by the Lancasters. Birthplace of Henry V.

Grosmont Castle (Cadw)

Substantial remains of thirteenth-century castle of Hubert de Burgh, raised on an earlier motte. It was later remodelled by the house of Lancaster.

One of the 'Three Castles' held in common ownership, with Grosmont and White Castle.

White Castle (Cadw)

Imposing moated remains of twelfth-century castle, probably the work of Henry II. Substantially remodelled in the second half of the thirteenth century. The castle was held in common with Grosmont and Skenfrith.
