Introduction to Art Series: The 17th Century

Join MonLife Heritage Museums online art history course with popular lecturer Eleanor Bird.

Revel in the spectacular art of the 17th century, as painters and architects developed the lessons of the Renaissance into a whole new realm of colour and drama. The online Monday evening hour will explore the excitement of the baroque, with its ‘swagger portraits’ and rich mythological and religious works; the restraint of Dutch landscapes and the humour of everyday ‘genre’ pictures, as well as the flowering of exquisite still-lifes. Along the way, we’ll focus on the work of Caravaggio, Rubens, Velasquez and Rembrandt, among others, as well as learning how art reflected the society and politics of the age.
