About

The Giant's Cave is one of the most dramatic viewpoints in the Wye Valley, found along the Wye Valley Walk north of Chepstow.

Part of the Picturesque Piercefield trail, it's a manmade cave leading to a viewing platform hewed out of the cliffside rockface. The viewpoint offers great views of the River Wye, and is one of many viewpoints created in the 18th century for the Piercefield Estate (which now is home to Chepstow Racecourse). Find out more about the Picturesque Piercefield Walk (plus a map of the route) here.

The cave is named for a stone giant that stood above the cave entrance holding a huge boulder over his head (as if he's about to hurl it onto the walkers below). Unfortunately both the giant and boulder suffered from frost and water damage and eventually crumbled away.

Conditions can be slippery after bad weather, so be careful before walking and please wear appropriate clothing / footwer.

How to get to Giant's Cave

From the Lower Wyndcliff Car Park (NP16 7JB) - This car park along the A466 is closest to the Eagle's Nest Viewpoint, but you can also walk south from this car park to reach Giant's Cave.

From St. Arvans (NP16 6EJ) - From the Bus Stop at the Piercefield Inn, follow the A466 north until a small lane on your right (over the road from the path). Follow this shortly through to a kissing gate, then turn left uphill (keeping the stone wall and then trees on your left). Exit the racecourse fields through another kissing gate, turn right to reach the 'Temple Doors', then follow the footpath past the 'Lover's Leap' viewpoint until you reach the cave.

From Chepstow Leisure Centre (NP16 5LX) - Parking at Chepstow Leisure Centre, follow the marked footpaths of the Picturesque Piercefield Walk until you reach the Giant's Cave. Alternatively, leave the leisure centre and walk north up the B4293 until you reach another path on your right. Take this through the woods then lower fields of the Piercefield Estate, then rejoin the Wye Valley Walk and turn right. Keep going until you reach Giant's Cave.
