About

PAINTING THE MODERN GARDEN: Monet to Matisse

This fabulous film which combines so beautifully the delights of glorious gardens and wonderful paintings, was based on a sell-out exhibition held at the Royal Academy in London. From the exhibition walls to the beauty of artists’ gardens like Giverny, the film takes a magical and widely travelled journey to discover how Monet and his contemporaries built and cultivated modern gardens to explore expressive motifs, abstract colour, decorative design and utopian ideas.

Guided by passionate curators, artists and garden enthusiasts, this remarkable collection of Impressionists, Post-Impressionists, and avant-garde artists of the early twentieth century reveal the rise of the modern garden in popular culture and the public’s enduring fascination with gardens today. Long considered spaces for expressing colour, light and atmosphere, the garden has occupied the creative minds of some of the world’s greatest artists. While Monet is perhaps the most well-known painter of gardens, other greats such as Van Gogh, Renoir, Cezanne, Pissarro, Manet, Matisse, Klimt, Klee and Sargent all viewed the garden as a meaningful subject and their works along with many others are featured.

For lovers of art or lovers of gardens, this is the ideal film.
