5 Questions for Aine Morris, Chief Exec of the Abergavenny Food Festival

It's the Abergavenny Food Festival this weekend (16th/17th September) and as usual it's one to salivate the senses. It's called the 'Cannes of Food Festivals' for a reason, as the cream of British producers and chefs head to this market town for tastings, demos, kitchens, tours and fantastic food & drink.

So we decided it would be a good idea to ask the Chief Executive of the Food Festival, Aine Morris, some questions as to why she loves Abergavenny so much and why it is such a great place for food.

What makes the Abergavenny Food Festival special to you?

"I have been coming to the festival for a number of years and I think that the community feel of the festival, coupled with the celebratory showcase of craft food and produce (with a special mix of culinary talent) means that this is a very special festival indeed.

Food and farming communities really come together here for the festival - there’s an air of excitement for visitors who are tasting and learning new things, seeing the best of producers gathered here and of course some famous culinary faces too!"

Where is your favourite place to eat in the Abergavenny area?

I have been really excited to find the local cafes and restaurants in Abergavenny that I didn’t know about before taking on the festival. The food at The Chapel being produced by Joyti Agnew is absolutely fantastic - everything is homemade, a daily changing menu and a really nice spot for lunch.

It was also lovely to discover Fig Tree Espresso for great coffee and cake and a lovely little secret garden.

If I’m eating out in the evening you can’t beat Shaun Hill at The Walnut Tree.”


Who is your favourite food hero from the Abergavenny area?


"James Swift from Trealy Farm Charcuterie. Trealy is the perfect example of a food business that works closely with a network of small farms to produce a high welfare high quality product.

James has successfully managed to scale the business so they provide a huge range of incredible quality meats nationally, while still retaining the integrity of a small scale local farming operation - that’s no easy thing do.”


What is your favourite locally produced food / drink from the Abergavenny area?


"Abergavenny enjoys some fantastic vineyards - the white wines being produced at Ancre Hill and White Castle Vineyard are amongst some of the best new British wines coming on to the market.”


If you could choose one place in the Abergavenny area to stop and enjoy the view with a locally sourced picnic, where would it be?

The Blorenge Looking up the Blorenge


"I’d have to say The Blorenge because it’s such an iconic part of the local landscape. Towering above the castle, the mountain provides the perfect backdrop to the festival and from up the mountain you get the most spectacular views over the town and surrounding areas.”
