Located on the Wales / England border, and defined by water, the area was once fiercely contested. Thankfully it’s more peaceful today, although reminders of the past turmoil remain with nine castles dotted across the rolling landscape at Abergavenny, Caldicot, Chepstow, Grosmont, Monmouth, Raglan, Skenfrith, Usk and White Castle. If you're planning a visit to any of the castles operated by Welsh Government's historic environments service (Chepstow, Grosmont, Monmouth, Raglan, Skenfrith and White Castle) you may wish to consider purchasing a Cadw pass in advance of your visit.
