About

Beacon View and Beacon Hill are peaceful woodlands on the edge of the Wye Valley National Landscape, with stunning views over towards the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) peaks of the Sugarloaf, Skirrid and Blorenge. It includes areas of recovering heathland where open areas were cleared of pine trees to allow the heather to return. Beacon Hill is the highest hill in this part of Monmouthshire (with a trig point to mark it) and has many great walks around the area.

Walks around Beacon Hill

There are a couple of great walks which include Beacon Hill, and it is a great base to explore the nearby woods around Trellech and Llandogo. Look for the information panel at the start of the trails for help.

Beacon Bimble - A 1.5 mile mainly level walk with several gates and great views of the Brecon Beacons. You can download a copy here.

Duchess Ride Ramble - A waymarked 3 mile walk (mostly level) taking in the beautiful Duchess Ride viewpoint over Llandogo and the Wye Valley. You can download a copy of the Duchess Ride walk information here

Parking

Parking is free, but overnight parking is not permitted. Please note the postcode will not take you directly to the car park, so please follow the directions below.

Nightjars

Take a walk at dusk in May, June or early July and you're fairly likely to hear nightjars, who have returned as summer visitors. The males give a most unusual ‘churring’ call. Dogs can disturb these sensitive ground-nesting birds, so please keep them on a lead or leave them at home if visiting in the evening to hear them.

Cows

Each year in the spring and summer Belted Galloway cattle graze at Beacon Hill and Cleddon Bog to help restore the rare habitats. These 'Beltie Boys' are easy to spot and are an important part of the conservation of the area.
