Details

There's nothing bitter about the mix of adventure and do-nothingness at this microbrewery's shepherd's hut for two.

Down the hill from Kingstone microbrewery, and sitting pretty in a bluebell glade, Goldings shepherd’s hut is the ideal panacea for world-weary urbanites. Sleep tight in this relaxed hut with eggshell stable doors, old Edwardian furniture, fairy lights and antique Persian rug. On rainy days, you’ll be thankful for the electric heater in the hut and the short hop over the hedge to the wood-burner-heated log cabin with hot shower (over bathtub), loo and kitchen area.

In the summer, the glade has a great community vibe, with two lotus belle tents as your neighbours and a communal al fresco dining area – perfect for small groups! Once the tents are packed away for the winter, you’ll have the place (including the bathroom and kitchen!) all to yourself.

Gather forest fruits from the patch for a bellyful of raspberries and loganberries which the laid-back hosts are happy to share. Arrange a Brewery tour and talk malts with Ed or book a pasta or bread making evening with Tori. After a day of exploring the ruins of Tintern Abbey, canoeing or going Ape in the Forest of Dean or trekking through the ancient woodlands, sup a cold bottle of treacle-coloured ale at the bar at the top of the hill, open a few times a week. Worked up an appetite? Wood-fired pizza nights are a monthly event at the bar or tuck into cheese and chutneys for a real Ploughman’s lunch in the Summer.

By car

From the South: Drive to Tintern. Once you leave Tintern village (with the Abbey at the far end, closest to Chepstow/Bristol), you'll pass the Wye Valley Hotel on your left. The drive up to Kingstone Brewery is about 300 yards outside the village opposite 'The Old Station'. Turn left up the bumpy country track (signposted Kingstone Brewery).
