Spain can boast some of the greatest names in art history: Velasquez, Picasso, El Greco, Goya… yet much of its art is little known outside the country. Explore the Art of Spain from medieval to 20th century with our popular Monmouthshire lecturer Eleanor Bird.

NB there will also be the opportunity to access a recording of one of the live lectures, which will usually be available for a week following, so you should not have to miss any

This series of ten lectures takes us through the Art of Spain from the late medieval period to the early 20th century, beginning with the influence of Islamic design from the Muslim south on art in the northern Christian kingdoms of what is now Spain. Highlights include the dramatic narratives and powerful portraits of Spain’s Golden Age in the 17th Century; Goya’s art with its contrasting images of royalty and the darker side of war and superstition, and the influence that Spain’s Modernists had on every aspect of painting in the 20th century.
