Monmouthshire's Hidden Gems

Llanthony Priory & the Vale of Ewyas

Nestled in the Black Mountains north of Abergavenny, Llanthony can feel like it is in the middle of nowhere. Discover the medieval churches of the Vale of Ewyas, walk along the heighs of the Offa's Dyke Trail and visit the ruins of Llanthony Priory (with a hotel on site for refreshments!).

Magor and the Gwent Levels

Tucked away in the South West corner of Monmouthshire is the village of Magor. Centred around the historic Magor Square, the village is full of great shops, cafes and restaurants.

Whilst here make sure to visit Magor Marsh and experience the natural beauty of the Gwent Levels. With abundant flora & fauna, and free to visit, Magor Marsh is a great hidden gem to experience.

Magor also offers fantastic access to the medieval Caldicot Castle, and Roman Caerwent, which are both also free to visit.

Llandegfedd Reservoir

The 434 acre Llandegfedd Lake is a hub for Monmouthshire watersports, offering open-water swimming, stand-up-paddleboarding, canoeing, sailing and more. It lays on the Monmouthshire - Torfaen border, and is just 15 minutes from both Usk and the M4.

White Castle

One of the 'Three Castles' (with Grosmont & Skenfrith) built to control the Welsh Marches, White Castle is arguably the least well known of the three. But set in the beautiful countryside in the heart of Monmouthshire, just 15 minutes from Abergavenny, it is definitely worth a visit.

The castle is open 10am - 4pm, and is free to visit. Make sure to visit the nearby White Castle Vineyard as well for some award winning wine!

Cefn Ila Woodland, Usk

Discover redwoods in the heart of Monmouthshire at Cefn Ila woodland. An old landscaped manor ground, Cefn Ila has been redeveloped as a community woodland with an old orchard and arboretum to explore.

There's space for 10 cars at the entrance, or you can walk the short 1 mile from the town of Usk. Make sure to pop into Usk itself after with its pubs, restaurants, cafes and shops.
