About

Walk or cycle across the (old) Severn Bridge along the M48 on this just under 5 mile route. It's a great way to experience the Severn Estuary, and to visit two countries in one walk.

Access to the path on the 'left' side from Chepstow is at the M48 Junction 2 roundabout, whilst on the 'right' it is just after the Caerwent Lane tunnel under the M48 (along the Wales Coast Path).

The path is slightly lower than the road, divided by three steel ropes, and you'll be relatively close to traffic and exposed to the wind so you may want to consider ear protection.

Generally walkers staycloser to the edge railing and cyclists closer to the road.

Please note that whilst you can walk and cycle across the original Severn Bridge, you cannot walk or cycle across the Second Severn Crossing / Prince of Wales Bridge.

Parking

On the Chepstow side you can walk from Chepstow itself along the Wales Coast Path, or park at Thornwell Football Club (NP16 5GH) which is a short walk from the bridge.

On the England side you can park in the village of Aust. A popular parking point is the old Passage Road leading to the former Aust Ferry slipway.

Openings

Please note the Severn Bridge may be closed due to adverse weather conditions, and it is not recommended to cross at these times due to the high winds / slippery conditions.
