Monmouthshire hasn't been immune to the steady closure of pubs across the UK over the past few decades. Thankfully many of our towns and villages are bucking the trend, with thriving pubs at the centre of their communities, led by licensees with vision, and supported by locals and visitors wanting something distinctive. Monmouthshire has 25 pubs recommended in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide 2022, and the Anchor Inn, Tintern won the regional heat for this year's Wales Pub of the Year award. We even have Wales' oldest pub in Monmouthshire, The Skirrid Mountain Inn at Llanvihangel Crucorney which can trace its history back to 1110.

If you've ever wondered why there are no pubs in Llanover, it's because Lady Llanover, a leading light in the temperance movement, closed all the inns on her estate in the mid-19th century. Somehow the Goose and Cuckoo high on the mountain above Llanover managed to escape detection and closure!
