Caldicot

Caldicot is one of four main towns in Monmouthshire. Located near the coast between the two bridges over the river Severn, its name is derived from the Old English calde meaning 'cold' and cot meaning 'cottage / shelter'.

Caldicot has always been an important transport point. It was on the Roman road from Gloucester to Caerleon, hence the growth of nearby Venta Silurum (Caerwent), the largest civilian settlement in Roman Wales, where today you can see some of the best preserved Roman remains in Europe.

Other highlights include Caldicot Castle, founded by the Normans and restored as a Victorian home. Set in 55 acres of wooded parkland, it has a packed events programme. Just up the road are the hidden gardens and subterranean grottoes at Dewstow. And at Black Rock you can see Wales' last remaining lave net fishermen practising the tradition which has been passed down through multiple generations over hundreds of years.

Pick up a bottle or two of light sparkling mead (a modern twist on an age old classic) or Hive Mind beer made with honey from beehives in the Wye Valley at Wye Valley Meadery Taproom while you’re here.

Black Rock Lave Net Heritage Fishery

The lave net fishermen of Black Rock promote the fishery as a heritage site and invite all to enjoy this last remaining welsh severn estuary salmon fishery which can be watched quite safely from the picnic site.
