Purpose of survey

Tourism is vital to Monmouthshire’s economy and generates income to support a wide range of businesses that benefit from spending by visitors. According to figures supplied by tourism economic indicator STEAM (Scarborough Tourism Economic Activity Monitor), the 2.28m visitors to Monmouthshire in 2019 brought in almost £245 million to the local economy and supported the equivalent of 3,119 full-time jobs. Visitor spending also helps keep rural businesses and services viable.

While economic growth (and recovery post-COVID) is important we need to strike the right balance between economic, environmental and social value if we’re to develop tourism sustainably in Monmouthshire. We want to develop a visitor economy that is most beneficial for all, by attracting the right kinds of visitors, in the right numbers, in the right places, and at the right time of year to avoid negatively impacting the environment and / or spoiling the quality of life for people who live in popular tourism destinations in the county. This will ensure that visitors continue to enjoy a positive experience here and that Monmouthshire communities continue to offer a warm welcome.

Management of the destination for visitors is guided by Monmouthshire’s strategic Destination Management Plan. The current Destination Management Plan, approved by Monmouthshire County Council Cabinet in 2018, and overseen by Monmouthshire's Destination Partnership, is due for review (postponed from 2020 because of the pandemic) and we’re asking businesses, residents and visitors for their views on how the county is developed, managed and marketed for tourism in future.

The Survey closes 30th November 2021.
