Route Details

The town of Venta Silurum was founded by the Romans in AD 75. Large sections of the town walls still exist and they are thought to be the best-preserved Roman town defenses in northern Europe. It was the main market town for the defeated Silures tribe.
The Royal Navy Propellant Factory operated just north of the town from 1939 until 1965, producing explosives. For this it needed enormous amounts of drinking water, conveniently supplied by pumps draining the Severn Tunnel. Later the US military stored ordnance here and it is now used for military and public order training.
The remains of Roman shops can be seen in Pound Lane. These were built around 120 AD and had a commercial area at the front and living accommodation behind.
