Talk details

Our autumn art history course ranges from the sweeping landscapes of 19th century westward expansion to Abstract Expressionism and the landscapes of the mind, via a huge range of styles and artistic aims. The course of ten lectures explores how US artists from Albert Bierstadt to Edward Hopper sought to develop an art of their own, breaking away from European tradition and reflecting urban expansion and rural values of the growing nation. Yet at the same time, America could not help but import the radical new artistic fashions of Europe such as Impressionism and later Modernism and Surrealism. Along the way, we will examine how painters reacted to the American Civil War and how the First World War brought new voices and ideas to the American artistic scene.

The course celebrates the major autumn exhibition at the National Gallery, London, of one of the giants of US art, Winslow Homer, whose work reflects the everyday world of later 19th century Americans.

And the first Exhibition on Screen film of the 2022-23 season (20th October at the Drill Hall) is about Edward Hopper (coinciding with a major new exhibition of his work in New York)
