Art History Online - British Art 1900-1950

Mon 20 Sep 2021 to Wed 1 Dec 2021

10 weeks of 1½ hour lectures Online via Zoom beginning Monday 20th/Wednesday 22nd September with half term break (25/27 Oct)

Online lectures continue in Autumn 2021 with a series of ten talks on British art in the first half of the 20th century. It’s a period when the UK, always slightly behind in adopting the fashionable new trends in European artistic style, began to explore avant-garde ideas from the Continent.

Around 1900, British painters were still following the Impressionist trend of the 1870s, but a new movement developed in London, the Camden Town Group, led by Walter Sickert. His brooding pictures of urban life encouraged others to begin to record the immediate, gritty world around them instead of a pretty, rural idyll. A 1910 exhibition of Post-Impressionist and Modernist work shocked the British establishment and encouraged young artists to take things a stage further and explore the abstraction of Cubists such as Picasso and the brilliant colours of the Fauves painters like Matisse.

The course explores these new trends with work by painters from the Vorticists, the Bloomsbury Group and the Scottish Colourists, to the revived interest in landscape by artists such as Piper and Sutherland.

You can choose to join the series either on Monday afternoons, 2pm – 3.30 or Wednesday mornings 10.30am – 12 noon, from 20th or 22nd September. Lectures will be one-and-a-half hours long, there is no homework and the course costs £75. Booking is essential – sign-up at the latest by 4pm on the day before – either Sunday 19th, or Tuesday 21st September.
