10 Llanover and Out!
Route Overview
The route heads through fields to Llanover Church, then crosses Llanover Park where the tree-lined drive leads you out to the village. From here you head up into the foothills of the Brecon Beacons and Upper Llanover. On reaching the Goose and Cuckoo public house on the Blaenavon mountain road the path crosses the valley and descends by some delightful hidden woods and streams to the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal.
A walk along the towpath brings you back to your starting point. Points of interest include Llanover estate church where Benjamin Hall and his wife Augusta, Lady Llanover are buried in an elaborate grave. Big Ben is said to be named for Benjamin Hall, while Lady Llanover is credited with revitalising the Welsh language and traditional Welsh costume in the 1800s. This route passes the site of the cloth factory she supported, and, due to her support of the temperance movement, the Goose and Cuckoo pub is found just beyond her boundaries.
