Fri 28 Jul - Sat 5 Aug Monmouth Festival 2017

Once upon a time, way back in 1983, Monmouth took part in the Wales Tourist Board’s ‘Festival of Castles’. A Rolls Royce Rally, Carnival, Medieval Battle, Son et Luminere and concerts were held to mark the occasion. In 1984, inspired by the success of the Festival of Castles’ events, Monmouth staged another Festival which included poetry, drama, dance and music. Rockfair 84, in which Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant played, introduced a rock music element to the proceedings. And so, as they say, a tradition was born.

In the beginning the Festival was held on the cobbles in Agincourt Square with artists performing under The Shire Hall arches. The stage (initially just raised boards) had to be put up and taken down each evening and chairs were laid out for the audience to sit and enjoy performances. The Festival quickly established itself as an important community event and has grown to be the town’s largest community event. With its popularity increasing year on year and Agincourt Square no longer able to contain the crowds in 2008 the Festival moved to Blestium Street Car Park where it remains.

Monmouth Festival is an open access, all inclusive, family friendly event which takes place over 9 nights. There are three festival stages: Main Stage at the bottom of town in Blestium Street Car Park, The Shoes Stage at the Three Horseshoes and St Mary’s Church which hosts the Classical Programme. There is a growing Fringe, an all day Busking Festival and the Family Fun Day is making a comeback this year

The programme is, as always, varied and diverse with everything from Rockabilly and Ska from the Delray Rockers and 2 Rude, to singer-songwriters Jake Martin and Daisy Chapman and the Blaenavon Male Voice Choir. The Noson Gymreig is back with Ragsy and Lowri Evans as is the Gymanfa Ganu.
